II. Meşrutiyet’in Saray Mimarı M. Vedad [Tek] Bey

Müjde Dila Gümüş

Vedad [Tek] Bey worked as Sultan Reşad's chief architect for approximately five years during the Second Constitutional era, when the political and economic power of the dynasty changed dramatically. II. Meşrutiyet’in Saray Mimarı M. Vedad [Tek] Bey aims to reveal how the new balance of power brought by the regime during Vedad Bey's period as chief architect was reflected in the field of architecture and restoration, and the interventions carried out in the dynastic buildings in Istanbul between 1909 and 1914. It closely examines the limitations and working conditions of the chief imperial architect post (sermimar-ı hazret-i şehriyari) held by Vedad Bey through construction and repair projects he conducted. Through drawings, estimate registers and documents identified by detailed archival work, it offers a multitude of novel information about Vedad Bey's thoughts on architectural practices, his approach to historical buildings, and how he managed business processes.
